Marina Hemingway is the biggest marina of Cuba, official capacity is 400 ships. During the pre-revolutionary era marina, situated on the North Shore, was known as Barlovento. In 1953 Fidel Castro changed the name of marina in honor of famous American writer Ernest Hemingway. The word «Maina» should not be associated with a women’s name. Marina means the sea.
You can walk through four canals 2624 feet (800 metres) long where you will see beautiful yachts and sailboats. For those who go by yachts mooring, clearing customs, communicating and provision of fuel, electricity and water are provided. In the territory of Marina Hemingway there are bars and restaurants, supermarket, shops, La Casa del Habano (chain store of cuban cigars Habano), small amusement park, bowling, cybercafé, currency exchange and other facilities.
In Marina Hemingway races on yachts take place. Also Annual Ernest Hemingway International Billfish Tournament takes place there. This tournament can rightly be called a legacy of the pre-revolutionary era of the Island. On 26 May 1950, 36 fishing vessels crossed the canal of Castillo del Morro. The Yacht Club of Havana was represented by the schooner “Pilar”, which belonged to the future Nobel laureate Ernest Hemingway. A group of fishermen offered to name a tournament in honor of Hemingway, who passionately loved fishing. Famous writer gave its consent and also became the winner of three tournaments – in the years 1953, 1954 and 1955. Since the year 1998 there is a rule “catch and let go” – they measure catch, take photos and put back into the sea.
To arriving into Central Habana you can take a 15-minutes taxi or take a civilian bus that connects with a touristic bus that transports passengers to Old Habana.
